Among the earliest influences on Bach as an organ composer was Buxtehude, along with other great players of northern Germany. Their organ works are characterised by an improvisatory style, and by the free, often sectional nature of their fugues. Though Bach's Toccata and Fugue is not firmly dated, it is surely a direct descendant of such pieces. It has all the features that make it improvisation par excellence - its arresting opening, pedal solos, and the many episodes in the fugue where the subject disappears completely; but it also has a drama and youthful exuberance and in addition harmonic and contrapuntal invention not to be found in his predecessors. Something else: the piece preserves a firm sense of direction despite its episodic writing, as if Bach had the last bars in view right from the start.

Saint-Saëns achieved distinction in virtually every field of musical activity, from opera and ballet music to oratorios and instrumental compositions, and he even published an important edition of Rameau's keyboard works. However the organ was among his earliest musical influences, and his organ works, though com¬paratively few, appeared regularly during his lifetime. The three Rhapsodies on Breton folk tunes appeared in 1866. The third of them gives free treatment to three traditional tunes, sometimes with a restraint perhaps unex¬pected from a rhapsody by a young composer with his first published organ composition.
Leon Boellmann, born in Alsace, was also a prolific composer of many orchestral and chamber works, as well as music for the Church. The Suite Gothique is perhaps his most frequently performed work and its exciting final toccata speaks for itself.

Widor was organist of St. Sulpice in Paris for over sixty years. The famous Toccata comes from the fifth of his ten organ Symphonies. These Symphonies, while written idiomatically for the organ, do frequently suggest an orchestral style of writing, though this toccata, which brings the Fifth Symphony to a close, is conceived in purely organ terms. Thematically it is very simple: its effect derives from the use made of three different kinds of figuration and touch - a theme in long notes in the pedals, detached chords in the left hand which sustain the rhythmic impulse, and continuous semiquaver movement (marked staccato throughout) in the right hand. The overall effect is of great brilliance.

Composers of organ music for Christmas have always relied heavily on pre-existing liturgical melodies or those of vernacular carols for their inspiration. In France, the 'Noel' carol melodies have proved to be a par¬ticularly fruitful source for composersof organ music from the Baroque era to the present day. These melodies belong to popular rather than liturgical devotion and often feature Variations on an original carol melody, or subject it to contrapuntal treatment.

Jean-Francois Dandrieu and Louis Daquin both wrote 'Noels' which typify the French Baroque school of organ composition in their exploitation of organ registration as well as in their deft handling of the Variation form.

The group of pieces by Alexandre Guilmant and the work by Theodore Dubois are all redolent of the French romantic style, which had its origins in the music of Cesar Franck and the organs of Aristide Cavaille-Coll; the lush and sonorous style of the music is complemented by a smooth and orchestral organ sound. Alexandre Guilmant was renowned for many reasons other than his organ compositions. As a brilliant recitalist, he toured extensively throughout Europe and the USA; as a teacher at the Paris Conservatoire he was responsible for the early training of Dupre and Bonnet, amongst other famous pupils; as a musical scholar he published editions of much early French organ music - best known are the collections 'Ecole Classique de l'Orgue' and 'Archives des Maitres de l'Orgue'; he was also titulaire at the Church of the Trinite. His compositions for the organ are numerous - two Symphonies for organ and orchestra, eight sonatas and twenty-five sets of pieces, as well as a sizeable output for the liturgy. The toccata - like the Final from the D minor Sonata - must be one of the most brilliant movements from the Romantic organ repertoire.
